Lars Schlichting is the Product Planning Manager for Pioneer DJ, the market leader in the design and production of innovative DJ equipment and software.
Inspired by fellow countryman Sven Väth, Lars started DJing and promoting clubs in Berlin in the early ‘90s. A move to London led him to pursue DJing full-time; he became a resident at Leisure Lounge and played various clubs such as Ministry of Sound. Always a fan of the New York house sound, he made the move to the Big Apple in 1995. He quickly established himself in the US scene, and signing with the newly formed AM Only booking agency got him touring extensively. Lars later branched out into DJing runway shows and fashion events for fashion houses like Tommy Hilfiger, Thierry Mugler and Replay, as well as product launches for corporate clients such as Dell, Swatch and Virgin.
In 1996, Roger Sanchez—a close personal friend and then spokesperson for Pioneer—introduced Lars to Pioneer’s product development team. Lars then got involved in the creation of two new products, the seminal CDJ-1000 and DJM-600. He has since played a key role in the development of many of the company’s most successful products, and as his role in product development and artist relations increased, he scaled back his DJ gigs.
Today, Lars resides in Los Angeles. Along with Takafumi Nitta, he oversees the development of all Pioneer DJ products, such as the CDJ-players, DJM-mixers, DDJ-controllers, and the recently introduced TORAIZ SP-16 sampler.
Lars is also the president of DVJ Vision, a visuals label he founded in 2005, and he mentors his son, 12-year-old DJ prodigy Kai Song.
