A native New Yorker, Jason Strauss has found success through numerous endeavors, and his mark on the hospitality world spans the United States and beyond. Most notably, Strauss and his partners are the masterminds behind some of the most successful nightclub and restaurant brands to open in the past decade, including Marquee, TAO, Avenue and LAVO. They currently operate six of the top 16 highest grossing nightlife venues in the country, according to Nightclub & Bar’s 2015 Top 100 list.
In 1997, Jason Strauss and Noah Tepperberg founded Strategic Group, offering consumers a premium nightlife experience with their various events and venues. Former hot spots include Southampton Staples Conscious Point (1999), Jet East (2002) and Dune (2007), as well as Manhattan Boites Luahn (2000) and Suite 16 (2001).
In 2003, Strauss and Tepperberg opened New York City’s Marquee Nightclub, which quickly became one of the most famous and respected clubs in the world. Soon thereafter, the duo partnered with TAO Group founders Marc Packer and Rich Wolf to open TAO at the Venetian in Las Vegas, which features a nightclub as part of a 60,000-square-foot Asian city containing a restaurant, lounge and club, and expanded to include a beach club.
They followed the tremendous success of TAO with the addition of LAVO Restaurant & Nightclub at the Palazzo Hotel Casino Resort in Las Vegas and added partner Lou Abin to the TAO Group in 2008. In May of 2009, they introduced AVENUE, a gastro lounge, where gastropub meets ultra lounge in New York’s trendy Chelsea neighborhood. In September 2010, they opened LAVO Restaurant & Nightclub in New York. Together with his TAO Group partners, Strauss opened Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on December 31, 2010. In June of 2011 in NYC, they launched Dream Downtown hotel, where the team operates all of the hotel’s food and beverage outlets, including room service, Ph-D Rooftop Lounge, Electric Room and Marble Lane Steak Joint.
In March 2012, Strauss and his TAO Group partners made their first international foray with the debut of Marquee at the Star Casino & Hotel in Sydney, Australia. On New Year’s Eve 2013, Strauss and his partners once again raised the bar on nightlife with the relaunch of Marquee New York after a major renovation, and fall of the same year saw the introduction of TAO Downtown in New York City. Expanding their footprint at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, TAO Group and Strauss’ most recent project was the second location of Beauty & Essex, which opened May 2016.
Strauss is also a partner with Tepperberg, Francis Garcia and Sal Basille in a chain of popular Artichoke Basille’s pizzerias, which currently have six locations, as well as a frozen pizza line that sells in more than 500 supermarket and convenience stores in the Tri-State Region.
Career successes for both Strauss and Tepperberg include receiving the Nightclub & Bar’s “Hospitality Operator of the Year” Award in 2006 for their work with Marquee and TAO, as well as being honored by Harvard Business School in March 2009 through a published case study about the dynamic duo’s myriad businesses, titled “Marquee The Business of Nightlife.” They were named by In the Mix as two of the 50 Most Powerful People in EDM for 2013 and 2014, as well as taking the #15 spot in Rolling Stone’s 50 Most Important People in EDM.
In addition to his hospitality ventures, in 2001 Strauss and Tepperberg formed Strategic Marketing Group, a lifestyle marketing, special events, consumer promotions and public relations company. Strategic Group has the unparalleled ability to integrate directly into lifestyle, entertainment, fashion and nightlife programs that create and influence popular culture by creating unique brand experiences for consumers. Since its inception, Strategic Group has established itself as a leader in giving corporations a credible cool factor. Under the direction of Strauss and Tepperberg, with partners in the agency Seth Rodsky, Brett Rogoff and Alex Cohen, the company has worked with global brands such as Coca-Cola, Donna Karan, Heineken, LVMH, NASCAR, Under Armour and Yahoo.
Strauss graduated from Boston University with a BS in hospitality management and public relations. Strauss serves on the board of directors of Remark Media, a global digital media company, and he co-chairs, along with singer Tony Bennett, and sits on the board of the Marty Hennessey Jr. Tennis Foundation, which raises money for USTA-Nevada programs and scholarships. In 2015, Strauss was named to the advisory board for Naked Brand Group, Inc., a global lifestyle brand focused on innovative and luxurious innerwear, loungewear, sleepwear and active wear. He currently resides in Las Vegas.
